Microsoft extends support for Exchange Server 2010
Microsoft has decided to extend the deadline for Exchange Server 2010 to end support from January 14, 2020 to October 13, 2020. The software giant wants to give companies more time to migrate.
Microsoft acknowledges that ending support for a product that “has been as popular and reliable as Exchange Server 2010” represents a significant change for businesses. To give companies that are upgrading more time, support will therefore not end on January 14 next year, as planned, but on October 13, 2020. That date therefore coincides with the end of support for Office 2010 and SharePoint Server. 2010.
Microsoft points out that businesses can migrate to Office 365 and Exchange Online using the Microsoft FastTrack service and upgrade to Exchange 2013 or 2016 directly from Exchange 2010. Upgrading directly to Exchange Server 2019 is not possible.
However, on January 14, support for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 running Exchange Server 2010 will end, so companies that are still migrating will no longer receive security updates for the server OS. It is not known how many companies still use Exchange Server 2010 and it is also unclear how many users Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 still have. On January 14, support for Windows 7, which still has millions of users worldwide, will also end.
