Microsoft expects lower revenue from Windows and Surface division due to coronavirus

Microsoft says its More Personal Computing division will not meet its second-quarter financial expectations. Sales of Windows and Surface devices are more affected by the novel coronavirus than expected.

At the end of January, Microsoft announced its quarterly figures and then the company already took into account the influence of the new corona virus on the figures in the coming quarter. Microsoft then indicated that revenue for the business unit that includes Windows, Xbox and Surface would be between 10.75 and 11.15 billion dollars in the next quarter. In their own words, that was already a wide margin.

Now Microsoft reports that that expectation will probably not be met. However, the company does not provide a new financial forecast. Microsoft says the supply chain is starting more slowly than expected. If manufacturers that make Windows hardware shut down, Microsoft sells fewer Windows licenses. The Surface division has also been hit harder than originally thought, according to Microsoft. Financial expectations for all other business units remain unchanged.

Last week, Apple warned investors that revenue in the coming quarters will be lower due to the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 outbreak.
