Microsoft has stopped supporting metadata in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center for Windows 7. This means no new metadata will be added. The data already downloaded for the media players will remain available.

According to the message on Microsoft’s support page, there will be no more new information about titles, genres, artists and albums in the Windows 7 version of Media Player. At Media Center, the TV guide disappears and information about movies, directors and genres is no longer updated. According to Microsoft, this choice was made on the basis of ‘looking at customer feedback and the usage figures’.

Ending metadata support will not affect the use and functioning of the media players in Windows 7. The same support for the media players in Windows 8 and Windows 10 will remain as it was.

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will completely stop supporting Windows 7. According to MSPowerUser, Windows 7 has approximately seven hundred million active users.
