Microsoft Edge gets Video Super Resolution upscaling for AMD and Nvidia GPUs

Microsoft is equipping Edge with Video Super Resolution, which allows users to upscale online videos to a higher resolution. The feature is available to users with select AMD and Nvidia GPUs. The feature works in the Canary build of Edge.

Microsoft Edge VSR is similar to the RTX Super Resolutionfeature that Nvidia recently introduced for its video cards and the video upscaling technique that Intel seems to be working on. The feature uses machine learning to improve the image quality of low-resolution videos. The feature should achieve that by removing “blocky artifacts” and increasing the video resolution. The feature is currently limited to videos with a resolution of less than 720p, writes Microsoft. Also, the feature only works on non-DRM videos like Widevine or PlayReady. The feature does work on YouTube, Microsoft confirms.

According to the tech giant, the feature works on devices with an Nvidia GeForce GPU from the RTX 20, 30 or 40 series. AMD users with a video card from the ‘RX 5700 to RX 7800’ series can also use the feature. Presumably the latter is a typo; AMD currently only offers Radeon RX 7900 graphics cards in its RX 7000 series.

VSR is available in the latest Edge Canary beta build for Insiders. Users with that browser version and a supported video card can enable the feature under edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution.
