Microsoft Edge gets performance mode
Microsoft is going to provide Edge with a Performance mode. According to the browser maker, it helps to ‘optimize responsiveness, memory, CPU and battery usage’. The mode is already testable in the Canary version of Edge.
It is not clear exactly how the Performance mode works. Microsoft does not provide details about that in the announcement. Microsoft does write that the performance improvements may depend on specifications and the way users interact with the browser.
According to The Verge, Edge’s Sleeping Tabs feature is locked to a five-minute timer when performance mode is enabled. That feature was added to Edge earlier this year to improve performance. The feature releases resources after a certain amount of time when tabs are inactive. In performance mode, that is after five minutes.
Performance mode is not yet available to all Edge users. It is in Canary test version 91.0.856.0, but it is not activated for everyone. Canary version users can enable performance mode with the code –enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle.
