Microsoft continues Insiders program for Windows 10 Mobile
For now, Microsoft will continue to release new builds to Windows 10 Mobile smartphone users in the Insiders Program. That was uncertain after Microsoft announced that new features for the OS are ‘not the focus’.
Several Microsoft employees have said that users can expect new builds in the future, All About Windows Phone writes. In addition, the Insiders program would include builds for Redstone 4, the upcoming Windows 10 update that would be released in March next year.
It is unknown exactly which devices can expect Insider builds, but Microsoft did announce that it is closing for the Lumia 640 and 640 XL, two of the most popular devices that ran on the mobile operating system. According to AAWP, users of Lumia 950, 950 XL, 650 and 550 can still expect Insider builds, despite support ending soon. Microsoft has promised regular updates for the 950 and 950 XL until December of this year.
In addition, there are other phones that appeared after the Lumia 950, such as the HP Elite X3 and Alcatel Idol 4 Pro, which are still in the period for which Microsoft has promised support. Microsoft said a few weeks ago that developing new hardware and features for its mobile operating system is ‘not the focus’.
Instead, it makes apps available for other platforms and uses its expertise with ARM mobile socs to enable emulation of Win32 apps on laptops with Snapdragon processors. Those laptops should be more economical than variants with x86 processors. Microsoft is returning to the desktop and wants to run Windows 10 on all devices, including a new category of devices that are close to smartphones.
