‘Microsoft ceases development of Android app support for Windows 10 Mobile’

Microsoft no longer seems to be working on Project Astoria, the code name for the project to run Android applications on the mobile version of Windows 10. According to sources, development has been quiet for some time.

Which reports Windows Central, who spoke to multiple sources about Project Astoria, the codename Microsoft is using to develop Android support on Windows 10 Mobile. Within the project, the Redmond company is working on an emulator to run Android installation files, and early versions of Windows 10 Mobile already had support for this. However, no progress has been reported in recent times, and development has even been halted, according to Windows Central. Microsoft has responded to the reports, but did not give a concrete response to the said halting of development.

According to the Windows fan site, Microsoft is no longer speaking to developers about Project Astoria, and things have been quiet for some time now forums which the company founded for the development of Android app support. One of Windows Central’s sources suggested that Project Astoria required a lot of manpower for development, and that progress was slow. Whether that is also the reason for the possible halt of development is not clear; the current status of the project has not been fully clarified. As a result, it is also unknown whether stopping development will also mean that Android app support will no longer be available at all.

Microsoft previously promised that it will support both Android and iOS applications, with or without conversions, in the mobile version of Windows 10. That should make the operating system more attractive; with previous versions Microsoft was criticized that there were too few applications available. Support for iOS applications, under the codename Project Islandwood, is said to be going well and is still planned.
