Microsoft brings Windows to the Internet of Things
Microsoft has put a website online for Windows on Devices early on. This platform aims to bring Windows to a new generation of devices, with Microsoft citing smart coffee cups, teddy bears and robots as examples.
The website was briefly online, Neowin saw, and has since been taken offline. However, it can still be viewed via the Google cache. “Our first SDK will arrive in the spring of 2014 and will give you a first look at our new software,” Microsoft writes. It will initially be a pre-release of the software and API framework, later in 2014 more complete versions will be released and integration with Microsoft’s cloud platform will follow.
Microsoft cites Intel’s Galileo board as a possible hardware platform for Windows on Devices. “With that kind of hardware you can measure temperatures, drive robot servos, detect intruders, flash LEDs and make music,” Microsoft gives as an example.
Windows on Devices will be unveiled during Build 2014, which takes place Wednesday evening. Then, among other things, the developer will demonstrate a piano controlled by its new software platform. Microsoft points to the combination with its Azure service. The expectation is that this cloud service will play an increasingly important role for Microsoft in the future and Windows on Devices seems to be an important step in this.
