Microsoft has announced a version of its Windows 10 operating system for the Raspberry Pi 2. Small computer users can use the operating system for free if they sign up for Microsoft’s developer program.

Microsoft and the Raspberry Pi Foundation have worked together for six months to make Windows 10 compatible with the Raspberry Pi 2 B+. The organization announced the new version of the minicomputer on Monday morning. The system includes 1GB of memory and a significantly more powerful soc than the first version of the B+: a BCM2836 soc with four ARMv7 Cortex-A7 cores.

Microsoft will announce details about Windows 10 for the Raspberry Pi 2 at a later date. This is a version of the software for internet of things applications, which has been adapted for the Raspberry Pi. Microsoft announced the Windows on Devices project almost a year ago. To be eligible for the free software as it becomes available, users must sign up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT.

The software will be released ‘later this year’, Microsoft promises.
