Microsoft: American Xbox One owner is on average 33 years old and earns a lot
Research from Microsoft shows that most Xbox One gamers are in the 25-34 age group, followed by the 35-44 age group. The income is usually between 50,000 and 100,000 dollars per year. Almost half of gamers are women.
Microsoft conducted a small-scale survey among 2000 American owners of an Xbox One, in order to get a picture of the average gamer. The Windows Central website managed to retrieve the internal document in which the research results are summarized. It shows that 58 percent of Xbox One owners are men and 42 percent are women. The largest group of owners is found in the 25 to 34 age group, with 28 percent of the total, followed by the 35 to 44 year old group, with 23 percent.
The income of Xbox One owners is remarkably high; households with incomes between $50,000 and $74,999 and between $75,000 and $99,999 both make up 21 percent of the total, while 28 percent earn even more. That means that nearly half of households earn $75,000 a year or more. The majority of owners are settled; 45 percent live together married and another 10 percent live together unmarried. A group of 23 percent still lives at home with their parents.
Microsoft also asked a group of 8,000 about their motivation for playing games and identified nine types of players. The Experts group spent the most on Xbox and PC games, with a preference for science fiction or fantasy themed RPGs. Microsoft wants to use the results of the research internally, but will also be made available to developers, so that they also get an idea of the audience for which they make games.
