Microsoft allows manufacturers to make tablets with Windows Phone
Manufacturers may start making tablets from Microsoft with Windows Phone. This is evident from documentation that the Redmond software maker has put online itself. Microsoft offers the option to create firmwares without phone functionality.
Microsoft calls the option ‘wifi feature pack’ and explains on a page for manufacturers that it is a firmware from which all functionality related to calling and connections to mobile networks has been removed.
In addition, Microsoft says on the same page that it will now allow screen diagonals from 6.01″ to 7″, with the resolution fixed at 1280×768 pixels. With both of these changes, it is therefore possible for manufacturers to make conventional 7″ tablets with Windows Phone. Until now, only smartphones equipped with Windows Phone.
The change is yet another indication that Microsoft wants to blur the lines between its various operating systems. Microsoft CEO Nadella previously said that would happen. Microsoft also showed a 7″ tablet with Windows, but it is based on an Intel processor.
