Microsoft plans to upgrade all Lumia smartphones with Windows Phone 8 to Windows 10 in the future. The software company has announced this in tweets. It is unknown when that will happen.

The notification came via Lumia’s Twitter account, in response to a user’s question. “We plan to upgrade all Windows Phone 8 devices to Windows 10 in the future,” Microsoft tweeted. In a later tweet repeated the company’s promise in somewhat firmer terms: “Windows 10 upgrades are coming for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices. And we’re going to release new Windows 10 models in the future!”

Microsoft is thus trying to avoid criticism that Windows Phone users have had in the past about the upgrades of the mobile operating system. Many users felt left out when they couldn’t upgrade their Windows Phone 7.8 device to Windows Phone 8. Microsoft did bring some features from Windows Phone 8 to its predecessor.
