Microsoft adds ‘double tap to wake’ to Lumia 950 and 950 XL with update

Microsoft has started distributing a firmware update for the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, which includes the activation of the “double tap to wake” function. Older Lumias have had that feature for years, but the latest models have lacked it so far.

The update should reach all users in the coming weeks, depending on country and carrier, Microsoft says. Double Tap To Wake is the function to double tap the screen to turn on the display.

It is unknown why Microsoft omitted the feature, but may be a reason to extend battery life. The feature requires a sensor to always register whether a user taps the screen, while normally pressing a physical button implies users wanting to turn the screen on. In the Settings of Windows 10 Mobile and earlier Windows Phone, Microsoft warns that the function may have an effect on the battery. Lumias have been supporting Double Tap To Wake since 2013.

In addition to Double Tap To Wake, the firmware update, with build number 01078.00053.16236.35xxx, contains fixes for various problems, including with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile coverage. Microsoft released the Lumia 950 and 950 XL at the end of last year for 599 and 699 euros. The devices are now available for much lower prices.
