Microsoft acquires platform for free online esports tournaments

Microsoft has acquired Smash.gg. The platform reports this on the homepage of its website. Smash.gg allows users to host free online esports tournaments. The functioning of the platform will not change according to the website.

The owner of Smash.gg reports the acquisition on his website . “Since we started in 2015, our goal has been to build active esports scenes around the games people love to play,” the platform reports. “Today we are excited to take the next step in that journey by joining Microsoft to strengthen our existing relationships and explore new opportunities.”

Smash.gg hereby reports that the website will continue to function as a platform for independent esports tournaments. It is also reported on Twitter that the activities will not change for the time being. However, the Smash.gg platform says it will receive extra income and support now that it is part of Microsoft’s Content Services team.

It is not yet known what Microsoft plans to do with the website in the long term. The company is only announcing the acquisition on its MSN Esports Twitter account , but has not yet commented. It is also not yet known what amount is involved in the acquisition.

Smash.gg is a platform that allows users to host online esports tournaments for free. This website started out in 2015 mainly as a place to host Super Smash Bros. tournaments, but later the site also later added games like Street Fighter V, Rocket League, Mortal Kombat 11 and Fortnite to its platform.
