Microsoft acquires platform-as-a-service Deis
Microsoft has acquired the company Deis. Deis creates open source software that makes it easy to distribute and manage apps at scale on the Kubernetes system. Kubernetes was originally developed by Google.
Microsoft has acquired Deis from Engine Yard, which Deis itself acquired in 2015. Details about the acquisition have not been disclosed. Microsoft acquires Deis for its Azure platform. With its Azure Container Service, Microsoft already provides support for the open source system Kubernetes. With the acquisition of Deis, the company is responding to the increased popularity of this system for containerized applications.
Deis provides platform-as-a-service services on Kubernetes. It provides paid support and training for its three open source tools for distributing and managing containerized applications: Workflow, Helm, and Steward. The company will also continue to work on these tools under the Microsoft banner, it is promised. Deis can be seen as an open source clone of Heroku, which was acquired by SalesForce in 2010.
