Micron has started mass production of gddr6. It concerns gddr6 memory with a capacity of 8Gbit that Micron wants to make usable not only for new, faster video cards, but also for AI applications and self-driving cars, for example.

For the time being, these are gddr6 chips from Micron with bandwidths of between 10Gbit/s and 14Gbit/s per pin; chips with a bandwidth of 16 Gbit/s will also have to be added at a later date. The maximum throughput is currently a maximum of 56GB/s, but Micron wants to increase that to 64GB/s with the chips with 16Gbit/s. An interface has already been made in collaboration with Rambus for communication with the gddr6 memory, with a maximum bandwidth of 64GB/s.

Micron is the last of the three major manufacturers to start producing gddr6 chips. Samsung has already started production of gddr6-vram at the beginning of this year with a capacity of 16Gbit and a bandwidth of 18Gbit/s per pin, with a throughput speed of 72GB/s. SK Hynix already had 8Gbit chips of gddr6-dram ready in April 2017, with speeds from 10 to 14Gbit/s.

Compared to gddr5, Gddr6 not only has higher maximum bandwidths, but will also be more economical, because the chips operate at 1.35 or 1.25V; the slower gddr5 chips operate at 1.5V.
