Micron Releases Crucial MX300 SSDs With 3D Nand This Summer
Micron has announced that its new Crucial MX300 SSDs will use 3D NAND TLC memory. According to a Spanish website, the SSDs are available in versions from 275GB to 2TB and the 750GB version has a suggested retail price of 200 euros.
Micron has not yet released detailed details about the Crucial MX300 SSDs. However, the manufacturer announced during a presentation that the SSDs will be announced in April. The memory manufacturer also released that the successor to the MX200 series will use 3d-nand-tlc memory. In that series, Micron still uses mlc-nand. The Crucial SSDs in the BX200 series already have TLC memory, which is cheaper than MLC.
The 3d-nand-tlc memory that will be used in the MX300 series should enable higher capacities at lower prices. Micron is developing its 3D Nand memory in collaboration with Intel. 3d-nand uses chips with stacked layers, in this case 32 layers of 384Gbit, bringing the capacity per chip to 48GB.
Although Crucial has not yet announced the specifications of the MX300 SSDs, a Spanish website claims to have information and photos. According to El Chapuzas Informático, 2.5″ variants with capacities of 275GB, 525GB, 750GB and 1TB will be available from July 19, followed by a 2TB version on August 16.
There will also be m2 variants in the MX300 series, according to the Spanish website. Only a 275GB version would appear in July, but models with 525GB and 1050GB would follow in August. The maximum read speed would be 530MB/s and the MX300 SSDs write at 510MB/s according to the information. The 4k random read and write speeds would be 92,000 and 83,000 iops. Furthermore, the MX300 SSDs should last up to 1.5 million hours and have a TBW value of 220TB. Protection against power failure is also present, there is support for 256-bit AES encryption and the SSDs come with a three-year warranty.
The price for the 750GB variant would be 199.90 euros. That equates to a price of about 26.5 cents per gigabyte. If the street prices still fall compared to the suggested retail prices, the MX300 models could be counted among the cheapest SSDs. It is not yet known whether Crucial will also come with a cheaper BX300 series.
Micron mentioned the arrival of the MX300 SSDs while presenting its new strategy to investors. The manufacturer also introduced a number of new NVME SSDs for use in servers: the Micron 7100 and 9100 series with mlc memory. The top models in the 9100 series are available in versions from 800GB to 3.2TB. The latter has read and write speeds of 3GB/s and 2GB/s and random read performance of 750,000 iops read and 160,000 iops write.
