Micron makes small 2TB M.2 2230 SSD that fits in Steam Deck

Micron has presented the first 2TB SSD with M.2 2230 form factor. Until now, SSDs in that format were available with a capacity of up to 1TB. Valve’s Steam Deck uses this SSD form factor, as do some laptops.

According to Micron, the M.2 2230 SSD with 2TB of flash storage is made possible by using 176-layer qlc-nand memory. The Micron 2400 series is the first series of SSDs in which Micron uses that memory. In addition to the M.2 2230 variant, there will also be longer 2242 and 2280 versions.

Micron is targeting business customers such as system builders with the 2400 SSDs and says that the SSDs are now being delivered in volume. The manufacturer does not mention recommended retail prices and the question is whether the small 2TB SSD will be for sale to consumers. Some Micron 2300 series SSDs are available through Pricewatch.

Micron will also supply its 176-layer nand memory to other manufacturers, so that they can also release 2TB SSDs of 22x30mm.

2230 format M.2 SSDs are not yet widely available on the consumer market. The Pricewatch only lists Kioxia and Dell models. The 1TB variant of Kioxia was the largest readily available SSD of that size to date.

In addition to the Steam Deck gaming handheld, some laptops use SSDs with the M.2 2230 form factor. This concerns, for example, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 and the ASUS ROG Flow X13.
