Micron Introduces M600 Series SSDs

Micron has released the M600 series SSDs. Micron’s high-end series is very similar to the MX100 released under the Crucial name, but also comes in a 1TB version and features a technology called Dynamic Write Acceleration.

The M600 comes in the form factors 2.5″-7mm, msata, m2 2260 and m2 2280. Micron does not supply the drives under the Micron brand name to consumers, but directly to OEMs and system builders. The manufacturer focuses on use in ultrabooks, tablets, high-end PCs and video capture systems. These are drives based on 16nm NAND memory, with storage sizes of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. The latter is only available in a 2.5″ form factor. available.

The controller is the Marvell 88SS9189 and Micron promises sequential read speeds of 560MB/s and sequential write speeds of 510MB/s, except for the 128GB model, which sequentially writes at maximum 400MB/s. These relatively high write speeds are partly achieved by what Micron calls Dynamic Write Acceleration.

This technology makes the mlc-nand cells behave dynamically like slc memory with faster write speeds. An empty drive runs almost entirely as a pseudo-slc cache, AnandTech describes it, and as the drive fills with data, the cache size for slc mode decreases. With drive filled 95 percent, the size of the slc cache would be comparable to competing SSDs from static slc cache.
