Micron introduces 8TB SATA SSD
Micron has introduced three new lines of SSDs for enterprise use. They come in 2.5″ and m2 sizes and use a SATA connection. They have storage capacities between 240GB and 8TB.
The different lines are the 5100 Eco, 5100 Pro and 5100 Max. The Eco line is available in 7mm thick 2.5″ format with capacities between 480GB and 7680GB, where the m2 variant is not available in a format larger than 1920GB. The Pro line is also available in 2.5″ – available in m2 format, with capacities between 240GB and 3840GB on 2.5″ and 240GB up to 1920GB on m2 format. The Max version only exists in 2.5″ format, with capacities between 240GB and 1920GB .
All SSDs use 384Gbit 3d-tlc nand chips with 32 layers and a Marvell 88SS1074 controller. They all offer a read speed of up to 540MB/s and a random read of up to 93,000 iops. Write speeds are between 250 and 520MB/s, depending on the size of the SSD, StorageReview writes.
The main differences between the three lines are the random write speeds and the maximum amount of data that can be written to them before they possibly break. The Eco line achieves speeds between 9,000 and 31,000 iops, the Pro line between 26,000 and 43,000 iops and the Max line between 48,000 and 74,000 iops. Depending on the size, the SSDs in the Eco line reach 0.45 to 8.5PB before they are worn out. With the Pro line these numbers are between 0.65PB and 17.6PB and with the Max line it is between 2.2PB and 17.6PB.
They are not the first SSDs to have such formats. Seagate had already introduced 60TB SSDs in 3.5″ format for data centers. Samsung has already shown a 32TB model and a 16TB model for sale. However, these are models with a SAS connection, which are intended for use in data centers and cannot simply be connected to a ‘normal’ computer, but the company Novachips has been offering 8TB sata-ssds for some time.
Exact prices for the SSDs are not yet known, but Micron does give an idea of the prices that the company wants to charge per gigabyte of capacity. This is between 45 and 55 cents for the Eco line, between 55 and 65 cents for the Pro line and for the Max version it is 65 to 75 cents per gigabyte. Assuming that larger capacities per gigabyte are cheaper on average, the Eco-ssd with a 7680GB capacity will probably get a price of $ 3456, which is converted and with VAT is 3882 euros.
