Micron DDR4 production has been affected by power outage
A Micron facility in Taiwan for the production of dram has been down for an hour due to a power outage. According to the manufacturer, it takes a few days for production to be up to standard. The impact on dram prices is still unknown.
Micron has confirmed the power outage to Taiwanese media, reporting that the DRAM plant in Linkou, near Taoyuan, Taiwan, will have production back to its previous level within days. The outage lasted an hour, with production coming to a standstill. Micron is making an inventory of the impact and what was the cause of the failure.
At the factory in Linkou, Micron makes DDR4 for PCs and servers and Lpddr4. With 125,000 wafers per month, the factory is responsible for 8.8 percent of global DRAM production, Technews.tw writes, based on information from research firm TrendForce. Micron, in turn, is the third largest memory manufacturer in the world with a market share of 25 percent, based on figures from the same TrendForce. Only Samsung and SK Hynix have a larger market share.
The possible impact on prices for DRAM is not yet known. Relatively short production problems can push up prices in the volatile spot market for DRAM significantly if, for example, they are accompanied by an expected increase in demand. The spot prices for DRAM are rising, as can be seen at TrendForce, but the influence of Micron’s production problems in this is unclear.
