The next-gen update is expected next year, and features higher frame rates and resolutions, and reduced loading times. The developer reports this in a blog post dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Metro franchise. 4A Games is also adding ray tracing to the next-gen version of the game. The PC version of Metro Exodus already uses this rendering technique for global illumination.

Like other next gen titles, owners of the PS4 and Xbox One editions of the game will receive a free upgrade to the next gen version. 4A Games also reports that a native version for Linux and macOS is currently being worked on, although the studio has not yet announced a release date for this. “We will be releasing more information on these versions closer to release.”

Furthermore, 4A Games is working on a new game in the Metro franchise. This title should be released exclusively on PC and next-gen consoles. The studio reports that it has “completely revised its engine and renderer for the next-gen consoles and their computing power, SSD storage and hardware ray tracing.” The developer indicates that they are currently not yet able to provide further details about the game.

The studio does report that it is ‘actively busy’ exploring a multiplayer experience in the Metro universe. For this 4A Games works together with developer Saber Interactive. Saber has worked on Halo: The Master Chief Collection, among others.

4A Games reports that it does not make a multiplayer title ‘to jump on a bandwagon’. “As creators, we want to explore a multiplayer experience that makes full sense in the Metro universe,” the developer said. “We also want to make sure that this does not come at the expense of our single player ambitions.” According to 4A, there must be a separate team that focuses exclusively on the online part of Metro.

The studio is also working on a new franchise, for which 4A is currently looking for staff. However, the studio has not yet announced any details about this. This franchise will ‘co-exist with the Metro series’.
