Meta stops production of the Meta Quest Pro. The VR headset manufacturer continues to build the devices until the materials run out. Meta will also not make a Quest Pro 2, The Information reports, although the company says it has not yet made a decision about that.

Meta scales back production, writes ZDnet on the basis of reporting from The Information. The manufacturer that assembles the headsets, Goertek, would continue to build the headsets until the supply of materials runs out. It is not known what this means in practice and how long the manufacturer can continue to use that stock.

This concerns the production of the original Quest Pro. It came out in November last year. The Quest Pro is the more expensive version of the Quest; The device costs 1200 euros and is sold relatively little, partly due to that high price. According to The Information, Meta will also not be working on a successor to the expensive headset. There therefore appears to be no Quest Pro 2. In a comment on Instagram Meta-CTO Andrew Bosworth is less emphatic. The company says there that it has “not yet made a decision” about discontinuing the Quest Pro 2. That “will come when we decide it will.”

Meta is working on a successor to the Quest 2, a headset that was released in 2020 and now costs 349 euros. The Meta Quest 3 was announced in June and should be released in the fall.

Update, 11:42 am: Added Meta’s response to the shutdown.
