Meta is reportedly no longer releasing new Portal video calling screens for consumers. Instead, the company only wants to focus on applications for companies with the Portal, including online meetings.
Meta is pulling the plug on the consumer version of its Portal devices. Several sources write that, including The Information and The Verge, based on insiders. The company reportedly only wants to focus on the business market with Portal. variety claims that Meta will continue to sell remaining stock of existing consumer models and that current customers should still expect support.
With Portal it is possible to have video calls with up to fifty people. The screen features an integration of Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa. In addition to video calling, it is possible to view content from streaming services on the screen. Last year, two more new Portal devices appeared, including one for home use.
The Information also reports that Meta is releasing its first version of its AR glasses codenamed “Project Nazare” for developers only. The AR glasses would initially appear on the commercial market in 2024. The second and third versions of the AR glasses would become available to consumers.
