Meta opens Horizon Worlds VR platform for users in the US and Canada
Meta is making its VR platform Horizon Worlds accessible to users without requiring an invitation any longer. For now, the platform is only open to adult users in the US and Canada.
Users in North America who are 18 years of age or older and have a Facebook account can download Horizon Worlds for free for the Oculus Quest 2. As of January 2022, the app will no longer run on the Quest 1. Horizon Worlds is a VR environment where up to twenty users can reside in a virtual space with different applications.
Meta himself introduces Arena Clash to the environment, a 3v3 laser tag game. In addition, the company is highlighting some third-party applications, such as Pixel Plummet, a retro multiplayer game, and Wand & Broom, which allow users to explore a city on flying broomsticks.
Facebook announced the platform under the name Horizon in 2019, as a closed beta. The environment is part of Meta’s strategy to develop a metaverse. Similar virtual environments are, for example, Rec Room and VRChat.
