Merger Samsung Mobile Display and S-LCD completed
Samsung Display, a spin-off of Samsung Electronics, has announced that it has completed the merger between Samsung Mobile Display and S-LCD. The merger of the two subsidiaries should allow the new entity to grow faster.
With the addition of Samsung Mobile Display to S-LCD, which has been part of the newly established spin-off Samsung Display since April this year, the number of employees at the display manufacturer comes to 39,000 employees, making it the largest manufacturer of displays. . The merger also increases the number of production facilities from five to seven.
The reorganization of Samsung Electronics’ display businesses was necessitated by poor operating results due to declining demand for LCDs. S-LCD, for example, suffered a loss of almost half a billion euros in 2011. With the merger of the two business units, Samsung Display expects to achieve economies of scale by aligning the business activities with regard to LCDs and OLED screens. The company also expects to make efficiency improvements at management level.
The company wants to make great strides in the coming years with OLED panels for TVs, among other things. Samsung Electronics wants to bring its first 55″ OLED TV on the market this year. LG Electronics also hopes to release a similar OLED model before the end of the summer.
