Mercury Research: AMD has a 20 percent market share in the laptop market
AMD had a 20 percent market share of the laptop market in the second quarter of this year, according to Mercury Research. That is higher than ever. In the entire market for x86 CPUs, AMD achieved a market share of 18.3 percent, according to the research firm.
The good sales of laptops with AMD’s new Ryzen 4000 processors have meant that the market share of AMD laptops is greater than ever, the manufacturer says. AMD relies on figures from research firm Mercury Research. That report is not public, but Tom’s Hardware quotes from the investigation.
In the second quarter of this year, 19.9 percent of laptops sold had an AMD processor. A year earlier this was 14.1 percent and two years ago it was 8.8 percent. According to the report, AMD’s market share in the laptop market has now grown for twelve consecutive quarters.
The range of laptops with AMD processor is still relatively small compared to laptops equipped with Intel CPUs, but popularity has increased considerably with the arrival of the Ryzen 4000 processors. They are economical and fast, and laptops with the new AMD processors often perform better than similarly priced Intel laptops. The popularity of Ryzen laptops is also evident in the Pricewatch, where models with AMD CPUs are widely viewed.
According to Mercury Research, AMD’s market share of the total x86 CPU market is now 18.3 percent and in the consumer CPU market it is 19.7 percent. The latter number is a combination of the market for desktop and laptop processors. The market share for desktop processors grew to 19.3. A year ago this was 17.1 percent and two years ago 12.3 percent.
