Mercedes-Benz wants to release automatic lane change function in Europe

Mercedes-Benz wants to bring its automatic lane change function to Europe. The company is currently adapting the system for European traffic situations. According to the manufacturer, the introduction coincides with the introduction of the new E-Class later this year.

The function works when introduced on highway-like roads with lane markings and separated lanes, writes Mercedes-Benz on Monday. The system can, among other things, automatically overtake vehicles in front at speeds of 80 to 140 km/h when lane markings are detected. Users must have a car with the MBUX navigation system. According to the manufacturer, no further input is required from the driver, although he must keep his hands on the steering wheel. The feature can also automatically take exits and switch highways when the navigation system is used.

The lane change function is part of Mercedes-Benz’s Distronic system, which can offer adaptive cruise control with steering assistance, among other things. The position is covered SAE Level 2 for driver assistance. This allows vehicles to brake, accelerate and steer automatically, but drivers still have to actively pay attention to the road.

The lane change feature is already available in the United States and Canada in Mercedes-Benz E-Class, C-Class, S-Class and EQ cars. The feature will be brought to Europe with the introduction of the company’s new E-Class, due this fall. Mercedes-Benz does not mention specific European countries where the feature will be released in its press release.
