Mercedes-Benz releases electric EQS sedan for prices from 106,000 euros
Daimler has announced the prices of the EQS, the manufacturer’s upcoming all-electric top model. The two models of this sedan or liftback start at prices of 106,374 and 135,529 euros. These are German recommended prices, including 19 percent VAT.
Parent company Daimler says it concerns the EQS 450+ with a power of 245kW and a more expensive EQS 580 4Matic with a power of 385kW. The first version is only rear-wheel drive via a single motor, while the more expensive version has two motors that drive both the front and rear axles. The car has been available to order in Germany since Tuesday and will be available in that country from the end of September.
The EQS can fast charge with up to 200kW, which is relatively high for a 400V battery system. This means that the car should be able to charge up to 300 kilometers of range in fifteen minutes, or up to 280 kilometers with the EQS 580 4Matic model. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 31 minutes with 200kW DC. With AC power, the EQS can charge up to 22kW if the user chooses the optional, more powerful on-board charger. As standard, the EQS can handle 11kW AC charging.
The specified range of the EQS would be 770km according to the European wltp standard, although that will mainly apply to the less expensive model. The more expensive model will probably not make it, because it consumes slightly more energy per 100km. Both models will receive a battery with a relatively high capacity of 107.8 kWh.
The carmaker emphasizes that the EQS will be the first Mercedes-Benz where owners will have the option to activate completely new functions via over-the-air updates. Once the car comes out, there are some ota updates available such as a highlight mode after which the vehicle introduces itself and walks past its equipment. There is also a pack that introduces new sounds, new light animations after opening and closing the car, and multiple mini-games such as Tetris and Sudoku.
Riders also have the option to unlock restrictions via software, for example for better rear-axle steering. It is normally limited to a steering angle of 4.5 degrees, but can be increased to 10 degrees. This reduces the turning circle of the more than five meter long EQS to 10.9 metres. Otherwise it is 11.9 meters.
Another eye-catching addition that is standard on the EQS 580 4Matic and costs an extra 8568 euros with the other model, is the MBUX Hyperscreen. This screen consists of three panels with a total diagonal of 56″. The whole extends over almost the entire dashboard. This gives the passenger his own 12.3-inch OLED screen with which he can operate the car or view entertainment.
The Mercedes EQS is 5.22 meters long, 1.93 meters wide and 1.51 meters high. The Cw value of the EQS is at least 0.20 and according to Mercedes that is a record for a production car. With this, the manufacturer wants to indicate that the car has a relatively low air resistance.
