Meizu starts selling Pro 5 smartphone with Ubuntu
Meizu will ship its Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition starting next week. The smartphone appeared last year with Android and has the same soc as the Samsung Galaxy S6. The Ubuntu version costs 331 euros, excluding VAT and import costs.
On the product page, Meizu shows the message that the smartphone will go on sale soon, but those who register to receive more information will receive an email with a link to jd.com where the device is offered. The webshop says it will start delivering within seven days.
It is the gold-colored variant with 32GB of storage space, which is equipped with 3GB of ram. A version with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash storage has also been announced, but it cannot be found on the website. The 32GB version has a suggested retail price of 369 dollars, or 331 euros. This is exclusive of VAT and import costs. With tax and customs duties, the total would be about 410 euros.
Meizu and Cannonical announced the Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition together in February. It is the most powerful Ubuntu smartphone to date. It is striking that support for Convergence seems to be lacking. The device has a 5.7″ OLED screen with 1920×1080 pixels and an Exynos 7420 octacore-soc. Last year the device was released with Android and earlier in April the new Meizu Pro 6 with Android was also presented. Or there in the future an Ubuntu version is not yet known.
