Meizu announces Pro 6 smartphone with pressure-sensitive OLED screen
The Chinese manufacturer Meizu has announced its new Android top device. The Meizu Pro 6 is equipped with a Helio X25-soc from MediaTek that has ten cores. The 5.2″ OLED screen has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and is pressure sensitive.
Meizu speaks of a 3D Press screen and thus indicates that not only touch, but also pressure can be registered. Huawei recently added such technology to the P9 Plus, while Apple previously did so with its iPhone 6s and 6s Plus as 3D Touch. The OLED screen comes from Samsung and has rounded screen edges. The Meizu Pro 6 supports 4G networks, but not on all frequencies used in the Benelux; support for the 800 and 900MHz bands is missing, band 8 and band 20.
The device uses the MediaTek MT6797 chipset, which is also known as the Helio X25 soc. It is a slightly faster variant of the existing X20-soc with ten cores. The chip has three clusters, which can be addressed individually according to the required computing power. The two Cortex A72 cores run at 2.5GHz, slightly faster than the 2.3GHz in the X20-soc. Furthermore, there are four A53 cores at 2.0GHz and four A53 cores at 1.4GHz. The GPU is a Mali T880MP4 and there is 4GB lpddr3 memory.
The metal housing of the Meizu Pro 6 is 7.25 mm thick and weighs 160 grams. There is a built-in battery with a capacity of 2560mAh and there is room for two nanosims. The device has a fingerprint scanner and comes in variants with 32 or 64 GB emmc flash storage. The available colors are silver, gold and black. The device is charged via the USB type-c connection. It also supports fast charging and high-speed data transfer according to USB 3.1 specifications.
Meizu does not go along with the trend to provide the camera with fewer, but relatively large pixels. The manufacturer has opted for a 21-megapixel sensor, the Sony IMX230, assisted by a lens with an aperture of f/2.2. Striking is the LED flash, which has the shape of a ring around the laser autofocus and consists of ten LEDs. The front camera has a five-megapixel sensor and an f/2.0 lens.
In China, the 32GB version costs 2499 yuan and the 64GB variant is sold for 2799 yuan. Converted including VAT, that is about 413 and 462 euros.
