New Zealand hosting company Mega has deleted 94,966 user accounts since January 2013 for repeated copyright infringements. This is evident from the annual transparency report.

In the report, the company emphasizes that the 94,966 users make up a small percentage compared to the 200 million global active users. In the past financial year, Mega closed approximately 8,850 user accounts due to copyright infringement.

The hosting company has adopted a three strikes policy since 2015, whereby users who have received three copyright infringement complaints in a six-month period are removed from the site.

The report also found that during the 12 months leading up to September 2020, Mega received approximately 1.19 million takedown requests for links to copyrighted files. The ratio between files that are copyright protected and files that are not, according to the hosting company, is very low. Mega claims to host more than 87 billion files. In the third quarter of 2020, the share of copyrighted files removed from Mega amounted to 0.0004% of the total amount of files Mega hosts.

When rightsholders intercept links to pirated content, they can file a complaint with Mega to have that same link taken offline. According to the hosting company, these takedowns happen within four hours and sometimes within minutes.

According to Mega, rightsholders can choose between three procedures if they have established an infringement of their copyrights: taking a link to a protected work offline, taking all links to a protected work offline, or taking all links and all copies of it offline. the protected work.

Mega is focused on privacy and security and is therefore popular with some users to share copyrighted files such as movies, music and television shows, according to its executives.
