MediaTek Unveils Kompanio 1380 SoC for Chromebooks
MediaTek has unveiled the Kompanio 1380, a soc intended for “premium” Chromebooks. The soc resembles the previously unveiled 1300T, only the 1380 has a less powerful GPU and lacks 5G support.
The arrival of a Kompanio 1380 octacore was already announced with the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 and now reveals MediaTek the soc with all specifications. The 1380 is similar to the 1300T announced last July for tablets and Chromebooks. For example, both socs have four Cortex-A78 and four Cortex-A55 cores. Those A78 cores are clocked at 1380 to 3GHz and the A55 cores go up to 2GHz. Both socs also support Lppdr4x memory and UFS storage.
However, the 1300T also has support for mobile networks up to 5G, where the 1380 does not support mobile networks, only Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5. The 1380 with Arms Mali-G57 MC5 GPU also has a less powerful GPU than the G77 MC9 from the 1300T.
MediaTek says the 1380 supports two 4k-60Hz displays, or one 4k-60Hz display and two 4k-30Hz displays. The soc would also support two 16-megapixel sensors and can record video with up to 4k. The new soc also has MediaTek’s APU 3.0, an AI processor that can perform AI tasks for cameras and voice applications to save on battery consumption. MediaTek says that more devices will be announced soon that will receive the 6nm Kompanio 1380.
