MediaTek socs can process images dual smartphone cameras with single isp

Taiwanese processor designer MediaTek has proposed two new socs. The Helio X27 and X23 include a single isp for processing images from dual cameras. In addition, the socs have technology to save the battery by adjusting settings of the display.

The Imagiq isp in the new MediaTek socs should combine images from dual cameras and perform calculations for playing with depth of field on a single chip, claims the Taiwanese company. For example, with a dual camera, one shoots in color and the other in black and white. Until now, MediaTek socs could not support dual cameras without adding additional hardware.

In addition, there is a new feature, which the company calls ‘MiraVision Energy Screen’. By adjusting screen settings on the screen content, the soc should be able to save the battery. It is unknown which settings the MediaTek-socs changes exactly to achieve that.

The X23 and X27 are both decacore socs with three clusters of processor cores. The fastest are Cortex A72 cores. In addition, the socs have eight Cortex A53 cores. The X23 and X27 still do not support lpddr4 memory. For that, manufacturers have to wait for the 10nm Helio X30. MediaTek will have it made at TSMC from next year. The X23 and X27 will appear in a shorter time. According to the manufacturer, those socs can be admired ‘quickly’ in new smartphones.
