MediaTek has introduced its new Pentanic 2000 soc. This 7nm chip is intended for 8k televisions with a refresh rate of 120Hz. 8k televisions with the chip will appear next year.

MediaTek claims that its Pentonic 2000 is the first commercial all-in-one television soc to support 8k120 displays. The chip is built on TSMC’s N7 node and features an integrated AI engine for upscaling and a MEMC engine for motion compensation at 8k120Hz. MediaTek claims that the Pentonic 2000-soc has the “most powerful CPU and GPU combination for a smart TV”, but the company offers no explanation for those claims, nor does it share any specifications.

The Pentonic 2000 is also the first television chip that offers hardware support for the H.266 standard. The soc also offers support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and decoding engines for HEVC, VP9, AVS3 and AV1. MediaTek speaks of Wi-Fi 6E support and optional 5G connectivity via an M.2 module. The chip also supports four HDMI 2.1 connections, UFS 3.1 storage and USB.

MediaTek reports that the first 8k televisions with Pentonic 2000-soc will be available next year. XDA Developers writes that this should happen in the second quarter.
