MediaTek releases midrange soc with support for 200Mp cameras

Processor developer MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 1080, a soc for midrange smartphones that supports cameras with a maximum resolution of 200 megapixels. It is the manufacturer’s first midrange soc with that feature.

In addition to supporting cameras with a resolution of 200 megapixels, the image signal processor in the soc also supports the creation of HDR videos at 4k, reports MediaTek. Predecessor Dimensity 920 couldn’t do that either.

Furthermore, the changes compared to the Dimensity 920 are minimal. For example, the socs are both made at 6nm and they both have clusters of ARM Cortex A78 cores. With the Dimensity 920 they come up to 2.5GHz, with the 1080 it’s 2.6GHz. In addition, both socs have an ARM Mali G68 GPU.

The soc will be released before the end of the year and smartphones with the soc will probably follow soon, because due to the similarities with the predecessors, manufacturers need to make few changes to integrate the new soc.
