Processor designer MediaTek has presented its T700 modem for laptops with Intel processors. The modem can provide laptops with 5G support on frequencies below 6GHz. The first laptops should appear early next year.

MediaTek has not put the exact specs of the modem online. The modem must in any case work with standalone and non-standalone networks on 5g, the company reports. In stand-alone networks, the radio technology and backhaul is based on 5G technology, while in non-stand-alone networks it is only the radio technology.

The modem does not operate 5g on high frequencies, which providers refer to as mmWave frequencies. At this wavelength, different and often larger antennas are needed and the range is also limited. In some countries mmWave networks are in the air, but that is not happening in the Benelux for the time being. The first laptops with Intel processors and the MediaTek T700 modem should be released early next year. It is unknown which manufacturers will supply laptops with mobile connections.
