MediaTek introduces Dimensity 800U-soc for midrange 5g smartphones

MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 800U, a soc for midrange 5g smartphones that should perform slightly better than the Dimensity 800. The new Dimensity 800U is already the sixth MediaTek soc with an integrated 5g modem.

Following the Dimensity 800, the 800U includes an integrated 5g modem with support for frequencies below 6GHz, with which the new chipset, like the 800 and the higher positioned 1000, does not support mmWave frequencies. The Dimensity 800U, like the 800, has two carrier aggregation so that a smooth transition between 5G networks is possible.

The Dimensity 800U has two Cortex A76 cores at 2.4GHz, supplemented by six efficient Cortex A55 cores at 2GHz. In comparison, the Dimensity 800 has four Cortex A76 cores at 2.0GHz. Presumably, the multicore performance of the Dimensity 800 is higher than that of the 800U. In single-core tests, the 800U is expected to score higher again. The GPU of the 800U is an ARM Mali G57; it is also in the Dimensity 800. Just like the 820 series, the new 800U supports full-hd + resolutions at a maximum of 120Hz, while the Dimensity 800 does not exceed 90Hz at this resolution.

Furthermore, there is support for up to four camera sensors with a resolution of up to 64 megapixels. That corresponds to the 800, while the 820 supports sensors with a resolution of 80 megapixels. There is also an AI processing unit that can relieve the processor of certain tasks, such as object recognition.

Like the other socs, the Dimensity 800U is made at 7nm. It is still unclear when the first phones with the new chipset will appear. The Dimensity 800 announced at the beginning of this year has already been integrated into a number of phones, such as the ZTE Axon 11 SE and the Honor Play 4 released in China.
