The Chinese manufacturer MediaTek has announced its MT6732 soc for midrange smartphones. The chip is built around four Cortex-A53 cores with support for 64-bit processing. The soc will be available in the third quarter.

The MT6732 is a quad-core based on ARM’s Cortex A53 with a clock speed of 1.5GHz. According to ARM, thanks to Cortex A53, processors achieve the same performance as current socs with Cortex A9 cores with a quarter of the power consumption. The GPU of the chip is the Mali T670 that supports Open GL ES 3.0 and Open CL 1.2, among others. Furthermore, the soc offers hardware acceleration of HD video decoding based on the h.265 codec. Finally, MediaTek has built-in support for lte.

The manufacturer will send the first MT6732 chips to manufacturers in the third quarter. The first smartphones with the chips will appear at the end of this year. MediaTek targets the midrange market with its first 64bit chips, just like Qualcomm does with its Snapdragon 410 quadcore, which is also based on Cortex A53 and which will appear in smartphones in the second half of 2014.
