MediaTek comes with midrange Helio G96-soc with support for 120Hz screens
Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek has announced two new smartphone SOCs, including a Helio G96 chip for midrange smartphones. That chip will receive support for 120Hz screens and 108-megapixel cameras.
MediaTek’s Helio G96 will include two Cortex-A76 cores at 2.05GHz and six more economical A55 cores, just like the previous Helio G95. The Mali-G57 MC2 GPU used, which runs at 1GHz, is less powerful than the Mali-G76 MC4 in the Helio G95.
The new G96 chip does receive support for screens with a higher refresh rate; the new soc supports 120Hz displays with full HD+ resolution, instead of 90Hz panels with the G95. The maximum camera resolution has also been increased from 64 to 108 megapixels. The maximum recording resolution for video remains 4k at 30fps. The G96 also gets support for Bluetooth 5.2 and faster UFS 2.2 storage.
MediaTek also introduces a Helio G88 chip, which seems to have the same GPU and CPU setup of the G96. The G88-soc does support a maximum of 90Hz screens at a full HD + resolution and camera sensors with a maximum resolution of 64 megapixels. Both the G96 and G88 will get dual SIM support with VoLTE. 5G support is missing. The chips should both appear in future midrange smartphones.
