MediaTek has released a new soc similar to a Dimensity 1200, but for use in tablets and ARM laptops such as Chromebooks. The Kompanio 1300T is a soc consisting of an octacore processor, a built-in Mali-G77 MC9 GPU and a 5G modem.

Manufactured on TSMC’s 6nm node, the Kompanio 1300T features eight cores, including a number of primary and large ARM Cortex A78 cores and a number of efficient Cortex A55 cores, reports MediaTek. It is still unknown at what clock speed these will run. In addition, the chip is equipped with a built-in GPU: a Mali G77 MC9. That’s a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the Kompanio 1200, which featured a Mali G57 MC5 GPU, and is the same GPU used in the Dimensity 1200 soc.

The soc is mainly made for tablets and ARM laptops, as a counterpart to the Dimensity 1200 for smartphones, and features a sub-6GHz 5G modem and dual-SIM support. The chip also has support for driving two 1080p displays, or a single 1440p screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The Kompanio 1200 got stuck on driving a single 1080p screen with 120Hz, and with the Dimensity 1200 this is 1080p with 168Hz. In addition, the soc supports cameras with up to 108-megapixel sensors and 4k video at 60fps and 4k hdr recordings. In addition to 5G, the soc also offers Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

MediaTek also says that the soc is equipped with an AI processing unit, which is responsible for, among other things, what it calls ‘AI Picture Quality’, and voice recognition. The chip is suitable for calculations of various AI applications, such as a speech assistant.

As yet, no tablet or laptop has been announced that is equipped with the high-end soc. These are expected to arrive at the end of summer or early September. MediaTek says it is in closed-door talks to develop an Android tablet powered by the Kompanio 1300T, but has not provided details.
