MediaTek announces Helio P30 and P23 socs

Processor designer MediaTek has presented two new socs for midrange smartphones. The P23 and P30 follow the P20 and P25. Both socs still have eight Cortex A53 processor cores, divided over two clusters.

The processor cores are the same as in the predecessors, made on the same 16nm process from TSMC, but otherwise MediaTek has provided the socs with many upgrades. The GPU goes from a T880 to a newer Mali G71MP2 from ARM. The modem gets an upgrade and supports an upload speed three times higher, namely 150Mbit/s. In addition, the modem now supports 4G on two SIM cards at the same time, while calling and video calling via 4G via two SIM cards is possible.

The P30 also contains a ‘vision processing unit’, a separate co-processor that manufacturers can use for functions in their own skin. The coprocessor is from Tensilica, Anandtech reports. In addition, the soc supports a dual camera, both of which have a resolution of sixteen megapixels. With the P23, that is a maximum of thirteen megapixels per camera in a setup with two camera modules. Some cameras have a maximum resolution of 24 megapixels.

MediaTek will release the P23 worldwide at the end of this year, while the P30 is primarily aimed at the Chinese market.
