Mastodon director: Twitter appears to be cloning Mastodon
Twitter seems to be working on a clone of Mastodon, the director of that social network says. Twitter announced on Wednesday that it is working on a decentralized social media standard that Twitter should adopt.
Moreover, the decentralized version of Twitter will not solve the network’s problems around false information and harassment in tweets, Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko claims in conversation with Digital Trends: “Twitter could have solved its own problems in their own space. This feels like an attempt to shift responsibility onto others.”
Rochko also thinks that the idea of a decentralized platform goes against the interests of the company Twitter. “Twitter has business interests that run counter to user interests. There are ads, and algorithms are there to get people to tweet more. Open source Mastodon doesn’t have all that stuff.”
Mastodon is a decentralized social network and has been available since 2016. Twitter announced on Wednesday that it was working on a standard for decentralized social media. Twitter itself would also like to use that standard.
