Marvel superhero creator Stan Lee has passed away
Stan Lee, the spiritual father of many Marvel Comics superheroes, passed away on Monday. Lee is the creator or co-creator of quite a few famous superheroes, such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Daredevil and The Incredible Hulk.
Lee’s daughter has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Stan Lee has died. He is said to have been rushed to an ambulance at his home in the Hollywood Hills, after which he was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. It is not clear what exactly caused his death, but his health had been ailing for some time. Stan Lee was 95 years old.
Stan Lee joined Timely Comics, which later became Marvel, in 1939. He worked with artist and writer Jack Kirby on the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Silver Surfer and the X-Men. Together with another writer, Steve Ditko, he created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, and with Bill Everett he created the superhero Daredevil. He sometimes had conflicts with them about who really should be regarded as the writer of the stories. Lee did not have the rights to the superheroes he invented and therefore did not receive any royalties.
Many of the Marvel comic book heroes created by Lee in the 1960s have ended up being made into movies or appearing in TV series. The creator, born in 1922, was briefly seen in almost all film adaptations, in the form of small supporting roles. He was briefly in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from 2017, and Lee also starred in several more recent films from 2018, such as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
