Marktplaats provides private data from other traders when a user requests their own data. This includes e-mail addresses, places of residence, telephone numbers and IP addresses. According to Marktplaats, it is a human error.

The provision of personal data from third parties with a data request is thus happening for the third time in a few years, De Correspondent reports. Bits of Freedom employee Douwe Schmidt asked Marktplaats to see the data that the company keeps about him. Every citizen is entitled to this on the basis of the Personal Data Protection Act. Schmidt received 32 IP addresses, places of residence and e-mail addresses of Marktplaats users with whom he has interacted via the site in the past two years. A telephone number was also mentioned for 14 people.

According to De Correspondent, Marktplaats has often been guilty of providing such customer data while this may be in violation of the law and the privacy conditions of the trading place. Marktplaats says it is a human error. From now on, an ‘independent expert’ will first check the extracts before they are sent.
