Windows Vista’s market share is declining for the first time in two years, according to research firm Net Applications. Vista would lose ground mainly because users switch to Windows 7 before the official release.

According to the Numbers of Net Applications, Vista’s market share fell by 0.2 percentage point to 18.6 percent in September. It is the first drop of Windows Vista since a short dip in January 2008. Windows 7 managed to increase its market share in September by 0.3 percentage point to 1.52 percent. This means that Microsoft’s new OS has a significant number of users before the official release on October 22 and is larger than OS X 10.4 – good for almost one percent – and Linux, which has a market share of 0.95 percent. .

According to Net Applications, which collects its figures using the visit statistics of 40,000 websites, the market leader is still Windows XP. The ‘elderly’ operating system has a share of 71.5 percent. In total, Microsoft operating systems still have a market share of almost 93 percent.

Windows 7’s market share growth began in January when Microsoft made public beta versions of its OS freely available. The software giant did the same with the Release Candidate that appeared on the scene in May. The market share of Windows 7 will probably grow even more in the coming months, when the OS will be pre-installed on new computers on October 22 and the OS can also be purchased separately. In addition, Microsoft has created several upgrade offers for existing Vista users.
