Market researcher: Xiaomi beats Samsung and is now China’s largest
According to market researcher Canalys, the Chinese Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung domestically in terms of the number of devices sold. The smartphone manufacturer sold nearly 15 million phones in the second quarter.
Xiaomi’s market share in China has been 14 percent since the second quarter, Canalys calculated. Other major brands, such as Samsung and Lenovo, each have a market share of 12 percent. This while they still scored 18.3 and 11 percent respectively in the first quarter, and Xiaomi still had 10.7 percent market share at the time.
An analyst from Canalys told The Wall Street Journal on Monday that Xiaomi’s gains can be explained by the relatively low prices of the devices, while the specifications are high-end. As it stands, Xiaomi is the fifth largest smartphone maker worldwide, after Samsung, Apple, Huawei and Lenovo. It saw its deliveries almost quadruple last year and wants to continue that growth in the coming period.
Xiaomi, which officially only offers its products in a few countries such as China and Singapore, sells other products in addition to smartphones, such as the Mi Pad. The producer recently presented its latest model, the Mi 4.
