Mark Gurman: Netflix games appear individually in Apple’s App Store
Tech journalist Mark Gurman claims Netflix Games’ mobile games will come individually to Apple’s App Store and, like Android, will need to be downloaded separately from the digital store. He claims that after having seen the code of the Netflix app for iOS.
If a user clicks on a game’s icon in the Netflix app for iOS, Gurman says they will be redirected to the App Store, where the game in question must always be downloaded separately. If this is already done, the game will open outside of the Netflix app and can be played. On Android, Netflix games are also downloaded separately via the Google Play store and it is possible to use the Game page within the Netflix app as a hub.
According to Gurman, the top of Netflix is thinking of streaming the games via its cloud infrastructure. According to the journalist, that is not a problem on Android, but the company quickly runs into limitations via iOS.
In early November, Netflix announced that it would start offering games for Android users as part of its subscription. Those games have been in the overview between the films and series since this month, and will have a separate page. Currently, Netflix’s game catalog includes five games: Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, and Teeter Up. This game library is planned to be expanded in the near future. Playing these games doesn’t cost anything extra and they don’t include any in-app purchases. It is not yet known when the Netflix games will be released for iOS.
