Manufacturers will deliver first Steam Machines in October
The first game systems with Steam OS will ship to pre-registered customers on October 16, with retail sales to follow in November. The Steam Controller and the Steam Link will also be available in those months.
Valve started pre-sale of the Steam Machines, the Controller and the Link on Thursday and the company has indicated that some manufacturers, including Alienware, will start retail sales on November 10. A select group that pre-orders a system can expect delivery on October 16. Valve has only mentioned American delivery dates and prices, nothing is known about the European introduction.
The first two manufacturers to start sales are Alienware and CyberPower, Polygon writes. The other manufacturers, which may include Alternate, Zotac and Gigabyte, are likely to make announcements in the coming weeks. They announced their Steam Machines in January 2014, but some have since chosen to scrap systems or release them as Windows gaming systems. Dell Alienware, among others, did this.
Valve has postponed an official release of its Linux-based Steam OS several times, partly because the Steam Controller was still being tinkered with. The Steam Link is a box with which games can be streamed to other devices in the house. Valve announced these in March.
