Companies such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp have joined the UHD Alliance. Content producers such as Disney, Warner Bros. and Netflix have joined. The aim is to boost consumption of 4k content and improve 4k technology.

The creation of the UHD Alliance was made public by Samsung during CES. The primary objective of the alliance is to make more UHD content available. That is why, in addition to numerous large electronics companies, various content producers are also part of the partnership. Netflix, Fox, Disney and Warner Bros., among others. participate. Furthermore, Technicolor and Dolby have joined the UHD Alliance.

In addition to the aim of producing more 4k content, the parties also want to look at how the quality of UHD material can be improved. They use terms such as ‘high dynamic range’, ‘wide color gamut’ and ‘immersive audio’, without going into further detail about their precise meaning.

Another bottleneck that the UHD Alliance wants to look at is how best to distribute UHD material. Companies like Netflix and Amazon are currently slowly delivering 4k content over the internet, but the first Blu-ray films and players that are suitable for native 4k have yet to appear. Furthermore, 4k hardware must be made more compatible with each other. In order to achieve these objectives, the UHD Alliance says it will be the first to work on drawing up a roadmap in the coming months.
